As American citizens our right to bear arms comes directly from our founding documents, specifically the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. As a part of the Constitution this amendment, and all other ratified amendments, are legally binding. These amendments were written to ensure the rights of the citizens while limiting the control of the federal government. A quick review of the first ten amendments provides interesting details of this concept of limited federal powers. For example, the 1st Amendment declares the freedom of speech, press, assembly and the free exercise of religion. The 5th Amendment ensures that citizens are not held for crimes without formal charges. The 10th Amendment says that the “powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” In other words, all of these amendments limit the power and…
