The president’s continued promises to create new jobs may come in a unique guise…as the often-cliched “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” It is this author’s opinion that “Obamacare” will in fact be responsible for creating tens of thousands of “part-time” jobs. Maybe even more! Oh yes, I did say “part-time.”
That may not be what America wants but I fear that is what America will get. We’ve been pounded over the proverbial noggin with an abundance of stories of companies who are cutting jobs or simply cutting hours due to rising costs from “Obamacare.”
Here is a brief synopsis. Feel free to Google any of these companies to get all of the facts. It is not my goal to re-establish facts that have been driven into the ground:
- Dana Holding Corp. is hinting that it will need to make numerous cuts to its 25,000+ workforce to counter-balance 24 million dollars in additional obligations from Obamacare.
- Stryker is estimating a 5% slash in its global workforce which would amount to roughly 1170 jobs.
- Welsh Alyn will be laying off 10% of its workforce over the next 3 years..again citing Obamacare.
- Boston Scientific– 1200 to 1400 layoffs plus considering moving operations overseas.
- Meditronic is estimating 1000 positions will be cut.
- Smith & Nephew 770 layoffs, Abbott Labs – 700 layoffs, Covidien – 595 layoffs, Kinetic Concepts – 427 layoffs, St. Jude Medical – 300 layoffs, Hill Rom – 200 layoffs
The list goes on and on… There are dozens of similar stories on the internet, so do some research. I feel that we all owe it to ourselves to keep informed and look at both sides of every issue. The fact is that all of these companies are directly citing that “Obamacare” is effecting their decisions to make job cuts. Furthermore, I see another danger looming. Companies are coming out to openly admit that they are cutting hours rather than jobs, to keep their employees “part-time.” It’s legal and it’s a way they can avoid increased costs. Here are just a few that have already announced considerations or plans:
- Papa John’s Pizza
- Darden Restaurants (the chain that runs such outlets as Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Long Horn Steakhouses and others)
- Kroger Grocers
There are more but I think two important points need to be made from these announcements:
- Most importantly, these companies are directly citing Obamacare as the cause of cuts and/or layoffs. How many companies are making cuts and not directly citing “Obamacare” as the primary cause? Maybe it is a secondary concern, or maybe they are just trying to remain politically correct, but either way you can not argue that it is, in fact, an added expense.
- With Obamacare in its infancy there will surely be more announcements to come. When a small business person sees Papa John come out, they are more likely to take similar measures. It’s the domino effect.
Oh, yeah, I totally forgot. You are reading this piece because you wanted to see how Obamacare is creating jobs. Well, look really hard at the tidbits that we have already seen pasted all over the media because I think the underlying story is that it might. Papa John’s for instance has hinted that it may be forced to limit its employees to less than 30 hours per week, or simply raise the price of pizza. What happens if it’s the former?
What if they cut everyone back to 29 hours? Well it stands to reason that people will still want pizza and it will take more Part-time employees to meet the required hours to make the pizzas. That’s more jobs. Thanks Barack Obama. Now you have potentially created more “part-time” jobs all over America.
Forget that people couldn’t make it on the 40 hour weeks, now they have a golden opportunity to have their hours slashed to 29. That could, however, mean more jobs all over the country. The plan worked to perfection! I am being somewhat absurd, of course, because if people are working 29 hour weeks, pizza becomes more of a luxury item. If people buy less pizzas, the hour cuts won’t mean many new “part-time” pizza jobs.
Maybe people will have to take on two 29 hour jobs to replace the one 40 hour job they once held. Maybe they will buy more pizzas because they won’t have time to cook with 58 hour weeks. I do know that at least one liberal group is calling for a boycott of Papa John’s and I think it’s hilarious. Stick to the party lines no matter what…you brain dead idiots.
Everything seems to have a domino effect, which is part of the reason people love to argue political theory. I am just telling you what I see. Rich corporate CEOs aren’t about to let you take their money. They will ruin a national economy before they will let you dig into their pockets. They look out for themselves first and you are way down the list. This is the way of survival at the top and don’t ever believe that it’s not. Washington D.C. and Wall Street are much the same. They are self-serving and only tell you what you want to hear to get your money or vote.
As you are reading this article you are probably thinking…OMG I hate reading bullshit from these conservative assholes. Well let me burst your bubble for a moment because I am not a conservative. In fact, I will be the first to admit that Romney was one of the brain children to come up with “Socialized Healthcare” in this country. When the shit hits the fan, Obama may be the second to admit Romney’s role. I didn’t vote for either of them.
It’s a scary situation for America. You can’t tax the rich my friend. You can’t mandate much of anything from the wealthy. It doesn’t work. It has been tried and tried. It fails miserably every time. When you try to take more money from the wealthy they just find a way to pass the bill on to the middle and lower classes. It always happens and probably always will. Now we are seeing more evidence of this selfish philosophy with recent announcements.
Deep pocket CEOs are threatening to cut jobs, move jobs overseas, and cut employee hours to skirt the requirements of Obamacare. Big business is again telling us what they think we are worth and I’m not really sure how the visionaries of Obamacare didn’t see this coming.
Think about what seems to happen every single time a federal minimum wage increase is proposed. Big employers get in line to talk about raising prices, cutting jobs, cutting hours, moving positions overseas, etc. Corporate America loves to blame the politicians. Politicians love to blame corporations. The reality is that every single time it’s us, the taxpayers, that pay for their every move in the form of inflation, lost jobs, higher taxes, etc.
Big businesses do not like mandates that cut into their profits. Politicians that challenge this are simply too naive to be taken seriously. Unfortunately we are letting these types of politicians run the show now and we are continuing to pay for their screw ups. It doesn’t affect government officials in the least. To them, the constituents are akin to chess pieces. Sometimes they win and sometimes they lose, but politicians love the game and have no loyalty to their pawns. Again, I don’t give a flying #### if you are talking about democrats or republicans…they don’t care about your electric bill this month. What they do care about is seeing if their ideas make it easier or harder for more people to pay those bills. If they fail, however, you still have to pay the bill and not your beloved “servant.”
We live in the real world and you can’t pass the bill to the people with money, because they ALWAYS find a way to avoid paying it. Politicians fail to realize this because they are driven by LOVE OF THE POLITICAL GAME and not reality.
For what it’s worth…I do believe that Obamacare will provide some new jobs, but I never said they would be better jobs. I’m not sure the president ever promised “better” jobs either, he just talks about creating jobs. Maybe this was his master plan.
Think I’m a moron? Go ahead and give me your opinions. This is America and we are ALL still free to speak our minds, unless we are getting paid for it and trying to open our mouths for more than 29 hours per week…
